Re-locating Soon? 26 Moving “Hacks” From A Moving Company
Moving Tips
- Avoid placing items from different rooms into the same boxes; it might be difficult to organize during the unpacking stage
- Use wardrobe boxes to pack your clothes
- Be sure you ask your potential mover if they are insured; standard insurance should be built into the price
- Ask if there is an additional charge for large or heavy items, such as piano’s big screen tv’s, etc
- Find out the cancellation policy; what does it state, what are the stipulations if you need to cancel
- Ask if your movers charge for the travel time from their office to your location and back to their office
- Make sure you understand pricing; whether it’s a flat rate or hourly rate
- Inquire if the rates are the same for weekdays and weekends; is there a charge for flights of stairs
- Inquire if the moving company you’ve chosen offers packing/unpacking services
- To get the date and time of your choosing, book your move, preferably 2-4 weeks in advance
- Stack dishes upward
- Ask your movers for tips and advice to make your move easier and less stressful
- Ask about moving time minimums (2, 3, 4 or more hours)
- Boxes get heavy quickly, when packing books, use small boxes (medium if you don’t have small)
- Label all boxes on the top and sides, it’ll make unpacking easier
- Electronics should be boxed in their original packaging. If not available, use bubble warp for protection
- General rule of thumb: small boxes for heavy items, medium and large for lighter ones
- Used boxes can save you money, but they may not be safe, you don’t know if they are strong enough to be used again. If you can’t avoid using them, don’t put fragile items in them
- Use packing tape instead of duct tape
- Items that are not used on a daily basis, should be packed first
- Pack a box with items needed right after your move and make sure you know where it is
- Don’t interlock the tops of boxes, always tape them
- Use special boxes when packing fine china and clothes
- Refer to the manuals for larger appliances, see if there are special moving instructions
- Never pack important documents with other belongings, make a separate box and carry it yourself
- Stay positive: every ending is a new beginning. Moving can be stressful, if you plan in advance and use simple moving tips, you be able to enjoy your new home much quicker
